Greetings to all of you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that you are keeping well, and staying cool this May. As I write this, I would like to remind and invite you to our final service for the 2024-2025 season, “The Courage to Serve.” We will meet again at 6:30 pm on May 25, 2025 at San Gabriel Presbyterian Church, 5404 Williams Drive, Georgetown.
Servanthood is a word that carries some unpleasant baggage. It’s difficult to hear without thinking of a person who is owned as property. Outside of the US, war torn nations suffer unimaginable atrocities, and captivity is common among them. Considering everything, it does not surprise me that the concept of “servanthood” has fallen out of fashion lately, even with the most devoted Christians. When it’s said at all, it is with a note of apology.
But Christ lived on earth as the ultimate example of servanthood, both to humanity and to God. Even on the night He was betrayed, He said, “Father, not my will, but Your will be done.” To look at the cost of serving, especially how Christ suffered, it may be terrifying to walk by faith, obediently following God. But with God, suffering is never the end of the story. “The last will be first, and the first will be last,” these were the words of Jesus. Turn the page and look at the risen Christ, sitting on the right hand of God the Father. The Ultimate Servant shines with the light of God’s glory, and invites us to go where He leads: to heal the sick, feed the poor, welcome the stranger, and tend the temple. To follow Christ is to serve, to love God is to obey. Often it’s done in silence, with no one but God in attendance; but to see where the path leads, that’s when I can say, “Not my will. Let Your will be done.”
This month, as we consider the courage to serve, I give you the names of those who are serving on our worship leadership team this year. Every one of them could have done something else on the Sunday nights we meet, and on the Wednesday afternoons when we plan our next service. Instead, they chose to follow God, serve Communion, attend a Zoom meeting, hand out intercessory candles, and show you to your seats. They serve whoever God brings to us, and many of them serve every time we meet. Look what has happened since.
