One Quiet Hour

What if there were a place and time where you and God could just sit down together?

Life moves fast, peaceful moments are rare. What if you could count on a time every month where you could sit still, close your eyes, and lean on God? What if someone prepared the space for you?

At the Georgetown Ecumenical Wholeness Service, that is what we do.

Every year from September through May, a group of volunteers from Georgetown area churches meet to pray and sing; but not in the way you might expect. It is neither a formal Sunday worship nor a high-energy evangelical hour; not a Bible Study or a campfire singalong. This is a sanctuary lit by candles, darkened to the point of intimacy, and filled with friends, neighbors, and others you may not have met. In this special place and time, people of all faiths — or none — are invited to come together as one body in the presence of God.

Inside, voices sing songs based on monastic chant; but unlike the morning church service you may have attended, you might not notice a choir. You will see a beautiful sanctuary, and you will hear scripture. There will be candles and a time for you to light a candle of your own. There will be a chance to voice public prayer requests and receive anointing with oil. A shared, open table of Communion is provided. At some point in the darkness and song, there will be an extended moment of deep silence; a time to speak privately with the Spirit.

We who lead the Georgetown Ecumenical Wholeness Service are moved by God’s presence in each of these quiet hours. They are important enough that we have prepared them now for over twenty years. And so, we invite you to come to our next service. Come to commune as One Body, just for a little while.

All are welcomed and embraced. Especially you. Join us.
